Fly Fishing in the Mountains

 Fly Fishing in the Mountains

Anglers travel to Western North Carolina from all over the world to experience the majesty of our streams and the beauty of our forests. Read on for a brief introduction to just a few of the streams in our stunning corner of the state!

Nantahala River
The Nantahala is split into three sections, based on the regulations applied to each stretch. For those looking for small stream fishing with no size limit or bait restriction, check out the Upper Nantahala. For those looking for more technical fishing and the chance to land a bigger fish, head over to the tail water section of the Nantahala (known by locals as the Nanty). The Lower Nantahala also holds the distinction of being the only stream in the state where night fishing is allowed!

North Mills River
The North Mills River is primarily stocked with Rainbow Trout and it's a phenomenal spot for those that may not have the time to hike, but still want to connect with the stream. We particularly love fishing this stream because it's located just a short drive from the Sierra Nevada Brewery - after a restful day on the water, head over to the tasting room to sip an evening brew.

The Pigeon River
The Pigeon River is a fantastic jumping off point for those just getting into fly fishing. Because there is little overhead foliage, beginners can feel comfortable learning how to cast. Anglers can find both stocked and native trout swimming in this stream - Browns, Rainbows, and Brooks abound!

Hunter Banks
Hunter Banks is a phenomenal resource for both local and visiting anglers. It boasts the most extensive inventory of fly fishing gear and materials in all of Western North Carolina. Not only are they an important source of information, they offer year-round guide trips and instructions for all skill levels.

Stay Local
Staying local is key to fully enjoying your mountain sky-fishing excursion. Carolina Mornings has dozens of vacation rentals in and around the Asheville area, each one unique. For a home located on an idyllic 200+ acre ranch in the Smoky Mountains, check out Imani's Cabin - a 3 bedroom, pet friendly cabin on Major's Estate. Major's Estate is great for retreats and large group gathering, and is particularly attractive to anglers as it boasts 1.5 miles of frontage on the Pigeon River.
