Summer in Appalachia means the return of ripe produce and colorful blooms piled onto vendor booths and scattered alongside mountain roads. On Saturday mornings Asheville locals and tourists alike flock to the farmers markets happening across the Western North Carolina mountains. While these market mornings are a ritual unto themselves, there’s a lesser-known pastime - U-Pick flower farms.
Those looking to immerse themselves within the blooming valleys of the Blue Ridge Mountains can pick from eight different options within an hour or less of downtown Asheville. From produce stands alongside wildflower fields to working farms, each location offers its unique spin on the experience. A lineup of vessels, freshwater, and pruners to borrow await your arrival. No prior experience is needed, just a love of flowers and the desire to spend some time in and among them.
📍FLYING CLOUD FARM - 20 min southeast of downtown Asheville

berry bushes alongside the wildflowers. Pay for an all-you-can-fill $10 cup or $25 bucket with Venmo, PayPal, cash, or check. 📍NEVER ENDING FLOWER FARM - 25 min north of downtown Asheville
It doesn’t take long to feel far away from the city heading north out of Asheville. The mountainsides steeply border the windy roads. As you pass old tobacco barns and small family farms, it’s hard to believe how beautiful things get a mere 25 minutes from Asheville. The Never Ending Flower Farm is tucked into an idyllic valley just east of Mount Mitchell. A destination all unto itself, Loretta and her family have created something special in the small town of Barnardsville.
The Never Ending Flower Farm is open from May through to the end of September for you-pick flowers. New flower varieties to pick adorn the field as the seasons change from month to month. Springtime bachelor buttons, snapdragons, and poppies give way to bright and cheery cosmos, zinnias, sunflowers, and marigolds in the heat of the summer. As the cooler air creeps in with the coming of fall, dahlias, amaranth, and celosias disperse themselves amidst the waning summer blooms. The farm is also the family’s home and it’s not uncommon to chat with Loretta herself as she tends to the flower fields on an evening walk.
There are three size options to pick from. Pay $25 for a 32oz plastic cup, $28 for a glass vase approximately 32 ounces in size, or $75 for a 3-gallon bucket. To enjoy the beautiful space without picking flowers there’s a $5 fee per person. Picnic tables line the side of the gravel drive and there’s a bathroom available for use onsite, making it easy to stay and enjoy the beautiful space as long as you’d like. Bring some food and picnic alongside the field as you arrange your newly picked bouquet.
Both Flying Cloud Farm and Never Ending Flower Farm can be best accessed by staying in one of our downtown Asheville vacation rentals, less than a half hour from these U-Pick options.

4 TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR CUT FLOWERS LONG-LASTING
- Time your trip for the morning or later in the evening to avoid the heat of the day.
- Make sure you place your flowers in the water as soon as you cut them! As you fill your container, it’s easy for the stems to get caught up with one another and never reach the water at the bottom of the vessel. Make sure the bottom of the stem is deep within the water as you place your blooms in!
Keep your flowers within the air-conditioned part of your car for the ride home. No trunks or truck beds! The cooler you can keep them, the happier they’ll be.
Trim the stems and replace water in the vase every two days for maximum freshness.
